Our story
Virtuous Reality began more than 30 years ago with a spark of imagination from our founder and creative director, John Coen. What started at Lancaster First United Methodist Church as a creative outreach soon became recognized nationally and internationally, growing into a vibrant blacklight-only space where kids, teens, and families could discover the joy of storytelling, performance, and creative expression. From the beginning, the heart of VR has always been simple: use creativity to share hope, encourage young people, and bring light into our community.
For nearly three decades, Lancaster FUMC was our home. When the church went through staffing and budget changes in 2025, we found ourselves at a natural crossroads. With their encouragement and blessing, we took a leap of faith, reorganizing as our own creative arts nonprofit.
What makes VR truly special is the people. Volunteers young and old who dedicate hours of their time week after week because they believe in the mission. Young performers who discover confidence and purpose with every show. Families who return year after year because VR has become part of their story too.
Through every season, we’ve seen how creativity can lift hearts, strengthen families, and open doors for young people. And through it all, John’s passion, leadership, and God-inspired creativity continue to guide the vision.
Three decades later, Virtuous Reality is still glowing strong - and our story is far from over. We’re grateful for every person who’s been part of this journey, and we’re excited for everything God has ahead.
